At this Tuesday’s Troop meeting we will be meeting at Townsend Park to do a little fishing. The troop will provide bait, but you should bring your fishing rods and other necessary tackle.
Remember anyone wanting to fish who is 16 or older will need to have a current PA Fishing License. A fishing license can be purchased either online or in person at most any Sporting Goods Store or Counter (i.e. Walmart) in the state.
As you prepare for for what to bring with you on a day hike, take into consideration the distance you will be hiking, the terrain, remoteness, and the weather. These factors will be important in making the right choices for what to bring with you.
Assuming your day hike, is more than just a stroll in the local park, the basic checklist includes:
You will need something to carry your equipment with you. A day pack does not need to be anything fancy as long as it has sufficient capacity and is comfortable to wear. A typical day pack is within the 11-20 liter size range.
Dress appropriately for the weather, think layers. This gives you the option to add or remove items as the conditions and weather change during your trek. When you start on the trail you may not need all of your layers, but as you ascend in altitude, or the weather changes you may need those additional layer.
Pack food that is easy to to eat on the trail like energy bars, jerky, nuts and trail mix are some examples. Be sure to pack some extra calories just in case your trip is unexpectedly extended.
Expect to bring along 2 liters of water per person, but adjust it based upon the conditions and availability of water along the trail. If you do plan on replenishing your water from natural sources, be sure to bring along the necessary items to filter and treat it so it is safe to drink.
Having the wrong foot wear can be the difference from having a safe happy outing to one of pure misery and danger. Choose wisely for the conditions you will encounter. If you are hiking a long a well maintained path with little or no rough terrain hiking shoe may be appropriate, were more rugged conditions may call for more ankle support.
At a minimum bring along a topographical map and compass of the area that you will be hiking in. Do not rely on your mobile device for your navigation. Batteries die, satellite signals may get block, or you may not have access to the internet.
A small first aid kit to handle minor injuries like scrapes and cuts. Possible a a triangular bandage to help for a sprain. v
Ten Essential list
The Ten Essential List is a list of services that need to be considered for your survival on your adventures in the great outdoors. Review the list and add or subtract those items as appropriate.
We will be taking a day hike on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail (LHHT) from the route 30 trail head to the route 271 trail head. This is about a 12 mile section. After this we will only have one more section of the LHHT to complete.
Be sure to eat breakfast before you come. We will have a morning and afternoon snack on the trail as well as lunch. On the way home, we will stop for dinner at a restaurant for dinner.
Each scout should be dressed appropriately for the weather, and have a day pack to carry their equipment and share of the food. Do not forget to bring at least two full water bottles. A bottle of gatorade or other sports drink may also be advisable to bring.
We will have a troop first aid kit with us, but each scout should have a personal first aid kit (like the ones we built at a recent meeting).
